"Once a person's basic sense of trust is destroyed, how can we expect them to be happy?"

"The undisciplined mind is like an elephant. If left to blunder around out of control, it will wreak havoc. But the harm and suffering we encounter as a result of failing to restrain the negative impulses of the mind far exceed the damage a rampaging elephant can cause. Not only are these impulses capable of bringing about the destruction of things, they can also be the cause of lasting pain to others and to ourselves."

"We can conceive the nature of mind in terms of the water in a lake. When the water is stirred up by a storm, the mud from the lake's bottom clouds it, making it appear opaque. But the nature of the water is not dirty. When the storm passes, the mud settles and the water is left clear once again."

i love the dalai lama.

however he appears held back by politics and fame.

he has an abundance of wisdom, but he tames it down
almost too much.
simplifying concepts for popular acceptance is a VERY
powerful tool,
but it is also an anchor.

though, the truth of some of his teachings are undeniable.

these quotes have personal significance.
i thought some others on my friends list might benefit as well.

it was so funny because I have two of those quotes underlined in my book.
I think that one of the tools of his wisdom IS simplification, that is why so many of his books have been sold in America. I hope that many, many, many people read it.
As far as wanting to push some bounderies, have you ever read Siddartha by Hermann Hesse?
mua.

i think perhaps 'simplification' wasn't the best word to describe what i meant.
but it doesn't matter anyway.

i never got around to 'siddhartha' when i went through my hesse phase.

i agree,
more people should be exposed to buddhist ideas.

thank you

you've provided some very relevant quotations for me right now, christ. i was just wishing buddah would help illuminate a key issue for me, and this entry certainly helps towards that end. bless you!
