classic

"classic rock" is dead.
don't agree?
fine, go out and point out for me ten stoner kids under twenty with Led Zeppelin shirts on.
you won't be able to do it, because the stoner kids don't listen to rock anymore.

if i may make a prediction, the classic rock radio format will be non-existant within 10-15 years, and replaced by the Classic Rap format "Featuring the best of the nineties, zeroes AND tens!" it'll be impossible to avoid gottdamned Eminem even thirty years from now.

as much as i pined for the death of the classic rock radio format while it was king,
given its death, and the negligible value of the new royalty,
i'm a little nostalgic for it.

please, enter into the comments zone, and list out a few of your favorite Classic Rock hits.
there is no shame here, bare all!

the classic rock songs that people like is a very revealing aspect to their personalities, in some weird way.

i like all of the above, with the exception of the Rolling Stones one, (which i don't hate) and the Doors (which i DO hate)

yah, the Who suck balls.

i've always hated the Beach Boys, but lately, i've been kinda warming up to the very late stuff that they did... "Pet Sounds" basically. and i heard Brian Wilson's "Smile" and it didn't sound bad.
BeeGees are ok,
myself, i'm starting to wonder exactly what is wrong with disco?
why does it suck?
maybe it's worth some investigation.

I really like the beach boys holland album

re: beach boys

[identity profile] sleepsleep.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
it was cute seeing
60-70 yr olds. singing along to beach boy tunes around lunch time @ pub in tinyville cornwall Uk.

[identity profile] wonkyear.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Classic rock would sound best over a crackly AM receiver.

[identity profile] wonkyear.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
The kids who work at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf at the CSULB student union still play the Doors and Zepplin almost every time I'm in there. Going from the new indie & commercial hip hop MTV feed in the food court, to the very eclectic union-only college station on the PA in the halls, to the CBTL classic rock, is almost disorienting.

A few Classic Rock moments:

Anything by Led Zepplin. CP already nabbed "Kashmir", so I'll say "All of My Love".
"All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix.
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by the Beatles.
"Dream On" by Aerosmith.
"Ziggy Stardust" by Bowie.
Should be some CCR on this list, but I can't be bothered right now to remember which of their songs I dug.

[identity profile] vuzh.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Aerosmith! ha!

boy, they sure are a different band now that they've given up the heroin.
i like a few of their songs, like "Nobody's Fault" and "Round and Round", although those aren't really hits.
"Sweet Emotion" was always a hit that i could sing along to.

"Ziggy Stardust" by Bowie.

well come on. you can't go wrong with Bowie. unless you're talking about records he's done in the last five years or so.

"All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix.

everyone always says what a waste it was that he died at the peak of his creativity,
but dude, just imagine what a parody of himself he'd be if he were still alive!

[identity profile] wonkyear.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Post-heroin, post-mortem

As much as I'm glad for anyone who escapes the clutches of an opiate addiction, the departure seems to degrade bands' creative output. Why is pain the fuel for so much excellent art? Hendrix would almost certainly have lost his shot at musical sainthood by stickin' around the living world.

Ole' switch-eyes
I picked a glam era Bowie tune because it seemed to fit the genre best. The classic rock stations in LA tend to play Young Americans, Fame, or Golden Years though, all of which I usually prefer over the Stardust. For recent Davey, I enjoy the Heathen album. I like what that famous Brazilian singer did with his songs in the Life Aquatic too, just picked up that soundtrack last month.

well... look at VH1

they are becoming more appealing to us 20 TO 30somethings....

(DIDN'T VHI USED TO BE NONSTOP PHIL COLLINS??)

[identity profile] vuzh.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
i haven't seen VH1 since i moved out of my dad's house when i was 18.

they were kinda AOR at the time...
some Phil Collins, some Paula Abdul, some The The, some Fine Young Cannibals, Depeche Mode, Soho.
you know, the safe stuff.

do they even play videos now?

... and now, Ms. Fexofenadine Sleep, you must out with your fave classic rock tunes!!!

[identity profile] photicdriver.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
i don't think bowie counts as classic rock, even though they play him on those stations. somehow i just can't imagine a redneck cracking open a miller and tubing at the river singing starman at the top of his lungs.

stones-gimme shelter
zepplin-trampled underfoot, immigrant song
anything from heart when ann was skinny
aerosmith- lost child, toys in the attic
jimi- hey joe, crosstown traffic
steve miller band greatest hits (#1 stoner album when i was in 9th grade)

[identity profile] vuzh.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
chugga chugga chugga chugga bow wow.... BARRACUDA!

yuck. Heart. ew.

haw haw Steve Miller!!

[identity profile] wonkyear.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Redneck... singing Starman...

I so wanna hear that!

[identity profile] vuzh.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Prettiest Star would be better.

[identity profile] sleepsleep.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
oh, when I was in high school, I listened to mostly the cure, love & rockets, jane's addiction, pink floyd, and peter gabriel.

[identity profile] vuzh.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, but you had to have heard the classic rock, and you had to have sorta liked one or two songs.
so yeah, you liked Pink Floyd "Money" and what else?
gimme the hits, kid!

[identity profile] sleepsleep.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, so..

words mean

drivel

[identity profile] wonkyear.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
We must've been in high school about the same time.

[identity profile] sleepsleep.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Around 90-91?

I would have graduated in 93, but I was in college by then.

[identity profile] wonkyear.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I would've been passing you the baton as I graduated, but close enough for musical tastes!

[identity profile] pooky-pants.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
You should be glad that kids where you are aren't walking around with Led Zeppelin shirts. At least they don't pretend to be into it. At least they aren't wearing it to be "in style" or "cool". When you asked us to go and point out ten stoner kids under twenty wearing Led Zeppelin shirts, I'll tell you, I could point out hundreds. Hardly any of the kids over here even have many of the cd's, or even listn to the stuff. They just say they listen to it because it's "cool", it's "in". I think the people over there are better off with thier ignorance of classic rock, than the people over here who blatantly bastardize the artists just to be "in".

That's it. I'm done now.

[identity profile] vuzh.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
over here? over there?

[identity profile] lokust.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
jethro tull!

[identity profile] hedorah.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Some completely random thoughts....

Classic Rock lives and breathes in Cleveland. I could find those kids in a heartbeat.

In my opinion, Classic Rock covers the years 1971 through 1980, as that's when a vast number of bands that were once absolutely brilliant in the late 60s [The Who, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Move (who became ELO), and sooo many more] turned into bloated horrific beasts intent on moving pompous, 'complex' product rather than dishing out inspiring, heartfelt quality music. I would not consider The Beatles as falling under any musical category, especially Classic Rock; they are their own musical category.

Fact: I once heard Brian Eno's 'Driving Me Backwards' on a Classic Rock station (it was a request, and I think the DJ was confused.)

Fact: our local Cleveland Classic Rock station plays Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain" (one of the greatest songs ever committed to vinyl) every Saturday night at 11:45 PM. That is the only time I ever tune in.

Emerson Lake and Palmer should have been drawn and quartered at their conception, but "Lucky Man" is a fantastic song.

10CC, who poured out complete dreck like "I'm Not in Love", were once the backing band for a man who called himself Rameses and claimed to be a reincarnated Egyptian prince. Their music was crazed acid folk imbued with cryptic lyrics and was rather cool.

Neil Young is fantastic.

Ted Nugent is absolutely dire, then and now.

King Crimson, of course, rocks, even though Fripp is one of the world's biggest assholes along with Frank "I'm so fucking jazz I can play this song with my hands tied behind my back" Zappa.

Even Pink Floyd's Meddle has some quality tracks, but that was their last good album.

I'm grateful for college radio, that's all I know.

[identity profile] vuzh.livejournal.com 2005-04-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
i'm referring to classic rock in its radio format guise, which cherry picks a few big hits from the 60's and 80's, and concentrates pretty heavily on the 70's.

Classic Rock lives and breathes in Cleveland. I could find those kids in a heartbeat.

some of the other ohians (ohiites?) have confirmed this. i think it's a regional thing, as i mentioned elsewhere in comments.

Ted Nugent is absolutely dire, then and now.

who could argue with that?

most of what you mention in this post, though, wouldn't be played on classic rock radio, except by accident... at least not any classic rock radio i've ever heard.

And so you're basing your concept of what's "dead" and what's not by what stoner kids listen to? Get a grip.

i think you've misinterpreted my commentary.
my point is that if young people stop listening to the genre, the fan base has stopped growing.
the "stoner kids" comment was for reference, and not meant to be the be all end all of the idea.
there are young folks still listening to the stuff, but their numbers are in decline, in my observation.

classic just classic

[identity profile] castellucci.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's that I'm not in my tweens anymore. Maybe it's that I've rediscovered a love for music through theiPod. Maybeit's that I like all kinds of different things, indie rock, classical music, swing, and classic rock. I was excited that I found the classic rock station in L.A. and I cheerfully switched between the punk rock indie station and the KROQ for the occasional dose of classic.

And then, two weeks ago, it happened. They did the format change. It's all more modern.

I suppose now that Classic Rock is officially dead, it's officially time to adore Classic Rock.

Thank Goodness, I'm going to rock out to The Who, now.

Re: classic just classic

[identity profile] vuzh.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
classic rock radio really made me hate some of the stuff that i sorta liked growing up.
i'm actually glad it's kinda on its way out.

[identity profile] iancstewart.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You're on fucking crack. Classic rock will never ever ever die. As long as there's an Ohio, there will be ........... Bob Seger, Rush, Journey, Lynyrd fucking Skynyrd, old Springsteen, old Tom Petty, old Billy Joel, 38 Special! etc to fucking infinity on the radio. the Eagles.

To the lasting detriment of mankind. I hope that your prediction comes true. I hate all classic rock, in case you hadn't noticed. With every fiber of my being.

[identity profile] vuzh.livejournal.com 2005-04-04 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe its an area by area thing,
in CO, classic rock was KING just ten years ago. there were like 5 or 6 different radio stations playing all the same songs.

now i think there's one, but they also play Pearl Jam and Matchbox 20 and they're getting more and more modern shit in there. if they have to compete with that style of music, then they're on the way out.

it certainly seemed like it'd never die, and i'm not saying it's GONE RIGHT NOW, i'm saying the root is drying up, the plant won't survive.

I hate all classic rock, in case you hadn't noticed. With every fiber of my being.

"I wanna rock and roll all night...
and party ev-a-ry day."

[identity profile] iancstewart.livejournal.com 2005-04-05 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
I hate "Rock and Roll All Nite" too!

[identity profile] sleepsleep.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
There are still a bunch of classic rock stations herew in NM.

zeppelin - tea for one, no quarter

pink floyd - echoes, dogs

rush - subdivisions

blue oyster cult - don't fear the reaper

[identity profile] twistedzen.livejournal.com 2005-04-05 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Classic Rock will never die.
It will hibernate and eventually be "rediscovered."

I think I'm probably on the polar opposite of the iancstewart 'I hate classic rock' scale, but he's right--As long as there is Ohio. There will be classic rock. It is the mecca for E-A-D.

And now for the tunes:

  • Boston-Anything off the first album (but in particular Foreplay/Long Time). After that they were shit.

  • Queen-Seven Seas of Rhye (why? Because Bohemian Rhapsody was just too obvious).

  • Led Zeppelin-Over the Hills and Far Away

  • Rush-Broon's Bane into The Trees from Exit Stage Left

  • Styx-Renegade

  • Bob Seger-Anything up to and including any track on Live Bullet, after that it was just a shadow of the former beardless Bob Seger (and of course, my fave is Turn the Page off of Live Bullet).

  • Pink Floyd-See Emily Play. It was, in my mind, the last time they gel'd as they were conceived-a psychadelic pop band that didn't know what the f**k they wanted. The two remaining incantations of Floyd (Waters-led, Gilmour-led) had classic rock 'hits', but still fell short in my mind of what the Floyd of the 67-69 era was about.
  • .

There's more, but for me it really falls into essential classic rock albums (played on vinyl)...not individual songs.

[identity profile] chaizzilla.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
sorry, i don't use stoner kids under twenty to determine whether a musical genre is dead or no. however, people do get on my ass for digging "the final cut" the most out of all the (incredibly awesome) pink floyd albums.

... and further, i'm not saying the genre itself is dead,
but it's dying as a marketable niche.

i'm not so good that the posting clearly at the outset, doncha know.
