i browsed a bit at Barnes and Noble.
i don't like buying there, they're overpriced and corporate...
but i do think it's a good place to browse, especially for CDs. the scanners they have up, where you scan the barcodes, and you can listen to snippets of any CD in stock -- that's pure genius.

i did determine that i really do, in actuality, need a couple of CDs that i already suspected that i need:
Eno - Apollo (Atmospheres and Soundtracks) and Zappa - Hot Rats.

also determined that the new Tortoise might be worth getting, i had been avoiding it, but it sounded enjoyable.

also listened to Brian Wilson's "Smile" a little bit.
my thirty year long antagonism toward the Beach Boys may be breaking up a bit.
"Smile" sounds like a weird deconstruction of the Beach Boys... it does seem a little cloying and claustrophobic, but it might be interesting to try to listen to the whole thing.
i'm allowing myself to get into stuff that i've always avoided to see if i'm purposefully keeping myself from something i might like for dubious or nonexistant reasons.

also browsed the DVD section so that i could find stuff to rent from Greencine!

Pet Sounds is also cloying and claustrophobic, but I love it.

lots of people love it.

i'm tired of seeing people gush about it when i really haven't heard anything but the hits.

Well, for what it's worth, I think "I Get Around" is one of the best songs ever.

it's worth exactly one-half fuck-all.
that ain't much, but you take what you can get.

btw, has anyone ever told you that your platelets are quite pretty?

Not as pretty as my sideways-lookin' indie chick.

just a lame reference to the "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" cliché

Oh! I pictured it drawn-out and drawly: "In yer eeeeyyye!" Like some kind of 40s mobster curse.

see?

that's why you should never demand an explanation from me.
the answer will always be much more mundane than whatever you can imagine.

oh oh oh oh you've got to see Lepa Sela Lepo Gore if you have any ability to deal with subtitles (some people really hate em so i don't like to assume coz they get bitchy about foreign film snobs and then somebody freaks out and shoots and before you know it the whole planet conflagurates n' shit..)

oh man, nooooooooooo salt on de popcorn por favor

i've got plenty more reccommendations where that came from, tho to narrow it down you should let me know what you're into, i tend to go for historical/anthropo fiction in a big way. i also highly discourage reading too many reviews before seeing a movie.

that's a mighty stack already, i will however reccommend vol2 of the russian animation to boot, maybe make sure they're both available in case you want more right away after seeing the first one. some of the ideas in the animations definately leapt the iron curtain at some point.

oo and i'm on the verge of seeing in the mood for love, i acherlly limped through a review of 2046 over at imdb (i suck at these things so there's some eek factor to being hit with the compulsion to try every once in a while..). adn you gottttta lemme know how the theatrical fanny & alexander is, or at least if it's i dunno.. i could be scarred for life by it or something..

you have to understand that i know 000 about Ingmar Bergman.
i know exactly fuck all about him or this work.
have you seen the TV serial version then?

i was actually torn between renting the theatrical version or the series.

this one http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083922/
i have no idea which one to go with, not having seen the other one.
i'm pretty nutty for his stuff, but of course the big draw is that it's got lots of that same difficult-to-describe thing i tend to like about things. which almost sounds like maybe i just think it's there and they're all great mirrors or something, but neh.

i don't know if volume 2 is available.

the movie you recommended earlier isn't available...
unless you misspelled it horribly?

have you seen the Russian animation then?

ohyea, and made many icons from it. i've got a copy of 2 that's screwed up enough to pretty much have wrecked two of the stories. the animation i was searching for (which brought me to this animation series) is safe & sound in vol 2 tho :) i've been meaning to try and salvage the rest of the stories...

I've got Blue Planet, the Young Ones & Withnail if you want the hookup. I also have other BBC nature docs that are very similar to Blue Planet but are not in print in the US.

My Withnail isn't Criterion though. Hm. I don't know how different they'd be.

Also, I didn't notice KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM on your list.

ahem.

i've never seen any of that stoof.

i have seen KISS Meets the Phantom though...
that's the one where the BeeGees play John, Paul, George and Ringo, right?
