i'm on the cusp of declaring "Lark's Tongue in Aspic" to be the greatest record of all time, even with the iffy lyrics and bad singing, neither of which was ever King Crimson's strong point anyway. right now i have to force myself to listen to anything else, otherwise, i'd just put that record on repeat all day.
certainly it's one of the best records of the 1970's. what are some others? write it down in your copybook.
it's funny... it took me years and years to get to the point of liking this record at all. it used to be my least favorite of the '70's Crimson records. John Wetton has an off-putting vocal style, i think. it hasn't grown on me, but i'm accepting of it.
the hook for me right now is the fact that it was essentially a ballsy rock band, but somehow they were able to fit in the artsy-fartsy trash playing percussionist and the delicate, fairy-fingered violinist as actual contributing band members, not just for occasional adornment. the push and pull between the delicate sections and the all out blast makes for some nice tension too.
i have to keep talking myself out of trying to record a cover version of "Lark's Tongue in Aspic Part One"
