I'm not asking rhetorically... how can you tell the difference between "underground music" and "aboveground music"?

I know I must have an internal definition but I can't seem to put one into words.
The only characteristic I can think of right at this moment is that "underground music" is not notable enough to make it onto Wikipedia, and "aboveground music" is, but even that has a grey area to it.
