vuzh: seven (Medley McGee)
.
Today I:

  • Had a day that won't add up to exciting LJ reading.
  • Ruminated on having stayed up late watching the Bourne Ultimatum, that it was the least enjoyable of the series.
  • Finally did some mastering on some things, notably the Electret Quintet pt. 1 and a first pass on the Long Defeat variations. I'll go ahead and burn them to disc for a critical listen on the various stereo systems I check my masters on... but clearly I can already tell that my mix needs some doctoring, there are EQs gone wild all up in there. The Mystified mix will probably require at least a few passes of mastering, but the Kirchenkampf one is one of the most even sounding raw mixes I've ever heard, I'm going to have to ask John what his mixing setup is... all I had to do with his mix is roll off the lows and put on a bit of compression. Mastering is all about looking at something from a number of different angles, and making sure it still looks like the same thing from each perspective.
  • Ripped a few Muslimgauze items to mp3 for listening to on the computer. I haven't listened to some of this stuff for a long while. I have sixteen hours of Muslimgauze on the computer now.
  • Considered making the Electret Quintet into the Electret Sextet again. Partially because that would allow me more room to explore the themes I'm working on, but mostly because of "Sex"! I think though, that the number 5 has its own intrinsic sexiness, and that so far five tracks per entry has felt very "right". Also, so far each track has been titled with the date, a letter denoting its sequence of having been composed (since some days have more than one track) and the instrument used... thus: 3/29s-tr606 for example. So with five releases of five tracks that brings me up to the letter 'y', which is about as even as I can hope for. I guess if I had a particularly least favorite letter, I could omit it, but I think I like them all. If I made the the project a sextet, then there'd be six releases, six tracks each. Is there an alphabet with 36 letters? Also along these lines, the cover art for the Quintet would be fairly cold, but for a Sextet it could open up some artistic themes that would be fun to explore. Maybe next time.
  • Made chili. Wifey's gluten-free diet has made making chili a challenge, but I think this time may be the ONE. I started by making a roux (with gluten free flour)... Justin Wilson rolls in his grave. Added stewed tomatos, and tomato paste, half a block of extra firm tofu, onions, green peppers, jalapeño, pintos & black beans with spices including Chugwater Chili, which contrary to all expectations, is actually pretty good. I've never ever made a roux before, but it worked just like I always heard it would. We added liquid at medium dark, might experiment with a darker roux next time.
  • Thought about making a new mp3 mix with some of the stuff I feel like listening to lately, namely David Sylvian's "Gone to Earth", Jean Michel Jarre's "Oxygene", Plastikman's "Closer" some Muslimgauze (perhaps "Al-Zulfiquar Shaheed", maybe "Return of Black September" maybe both) and possibly also Autechre's "Incunabula"... and just to make it lopsided maybe Elbow's "Cast of Thousands". I wonder if Elbow's new one is going to be any good? So far my mp3 mix is stalled because I can't find my copy of the Plastikman record.
  • Enjoyed the HELL out of the instrumental version of "Peter Piper" by Run-DMC... download it: here. I think I still have my version of "Peter Piper" up for download... yes indeed, here it is.
  • Considered that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition may have done more to devalue sincerity than any other single thing in the history of the USA.
