overtones

Wifey has been, of late, caught up in a near-obsessive interest in didgeridoos and throat singing.

She ordered a didge and plans to order more, apparently. Cool with me, I'm all about the drones. In the meantime, I dug out a piece of PVC pipe that I had in the basement... I had discovered a number of years ago that it could function as a didgeridoo. The poorman's didge has been stuck to wifey's face ever since... I can barely pry her lips off the damn thing.

On the subject of overtone singing, it turns out that I can overtone sing in the Tuvan style rather easily... OK, the Tuvans actually have more than one style, and I can do the Sygyt mid-range style easily (but my overtones aren't very strong), and I can kinda do the Kargyraa weird low vocal, although I'm not particularly pleased with my version of it. I'm sure with a good deal of practice I could improve my skills a lot. I just heard what it sounded like and tried and was able to do it.

I like imitating things with my voice (or with other mouth sounds), and always have. I have imitated voices for a long time, but they're all non-serious, parody imitations, not like professional or anything. Just a goofy thing I like to do.

When I can't imitate something with my voice, it really irritates me, though.

For example, when I was much younger, a stupid teen with a Metallica fixation (how original of me, I know), I was very upset that I couldn't do a James Hetfield voice. Singing any Metallica song always reduced my throat to tatters. Still can't do yell-singing type stuff. Ah well. My career as a heavy metal vocalist has long ago withered away, but my career as a Tuvan overtone singer is just beginning!
