indonesia's ocean of hot mud

Here's a news story I hadn't heard about at all on the news.

Some sort of toxic hot mud is spewing out of the ground in Indonesia at the site of a gas well, burying entire villages, creating a huge steaming lake of hot toxic mud.

I tried to find some sort of explanation about what the cause of this could be...

Santos has declined to comment directly on the cause of the disaster and clean-up attempts, saying these are matters for the well operator and Indonesian authorities.

OF COURSE they did!
