two bits of international news
Oct. 24th, 2001 05:44 pmthat worry me greatly.
#1 a Tim Weiner piece from the New York Times, "Israel rebuffs Bush plea to leave Palestinian areas"
i AM pleasantly surprised (yet again!) that Bush is putting pressure on Sharon to withdraw, (even if it is only for a pullout from the reoccupied cities.) {note to self to write to Prez Bush encouraging him}
but the situation is escalating in this area, and it bodes ill for the outcome of this "war".
#2 an Associated Press piece by Kathy Gannon with the headline "Muslims urge U.S. break in bombing for holy month".
looks like we will be bombing throughout the Islam holy month of Ramadan.
the current US opinion is that we should do this, since it will cause the enemy especially grave psychological distress.
yes, i think it will indeed cause this among the terrorists along with the rest of the Muslim world.
i think we have nothing to lose by stopping bombing during Ramadan, and much to gain.
a.) it will be harder for the mouthpiece to feed his followers the misinformation that the US has no respect for Islam if we respect their holy month.
b.) Muslims must fast and pray steadily throughout the month, there will be no way for the Taliban to rebuild a military (as if they actually could do this anyway), since they will be very busy with their religious duties.
c.) support may be more forthcoming from other Islamic countries, and we desperately need Islamic support.
on a similar topic, i found two very interesting links in
ivan_durak's journal.
Say it loud: no more support until Israel agrees to pull out
Biblio-quiz: The Bible, the Quran or "Mein Kampf"?
ivan_durak ROCKS!!
